Small things at home that help your child at school

This week's tip for parents

घर में सब एक-दूसरे से इज़्ज़त से बात करें, बच्चा यही सीखता है।

Speak respectfully at home; children learn from it.

Every day

Ten minutes that matter

  • Ask "What did you learn today?" and listen to the answer
  • Read together for ten minutes, in Hindi or English
  • Check the school bag and diary once
  • Say one thing your child did well
Nursery to UKG

For the youngest children

  • Let your child eat, wash hands and pack the bag alone
  • Count stairs, fruits and coins together
  • Tell one story at bedtime
  • Keep the same sleep time, even on Sunday
Classes 1 to 5

Building the reading habit

  • Fix one place and one time for homework
  • Let your child read signboards and labels aloud
  • Praise effort before marks
  • Limit the phone to a fixed time
Classes 6 to 8

Growing up

  • Talk about the day, not only about marks
  • Give one responsibility at home
  • Know your child's friends
  • Start talking about the next school in Class 7
Before exams

A calm exam week

  • Make a simple timetable together
  • Sleep on time; no late-night study
  • A light breakfast on exam day
  • Never compare with another child
Working with the school

We are one team

  • Come to every parent-teacher meeting
  • Tell the class teacher about any change at home
  • Send a note if your child will be absent
  • Raise a worry early, with the teacher first

These are general tips written for this website. Every child is different; talk to the class teacher about yours.
